The firstborn puppy is successfully delivered and immediately nurses.
The fifth puppy exits the birth canal in a thin membrane. It is removed to allow it to breathe
When the mother dog does not chew off the umbilical cord, it must be tied off with unwaxed dental floss to prevent bleeding and cut with sterilized scissors. It is then wiped with iodine to prevent infection. The fleshy mound is the placenta, no longer useful after the cord is cut.
Nala surprises us with a last and unexpected 8th puppy! Whelp ID collars are placed to set them apart from one another.
