BEFORE ADOPTING

Training

Goldendoodles thrive from hybrid vigor between two breeds that already excel in areas of intelligence and temperament. They catch on quick and can be easily trained at an age as early as 4 weeks. I definitely recommend them to first time owners or those who have minimal experience with raising a puppy. However, a Goldendoodle who receives too little training and discipline may act out and create mischief (in the form of a steaming pile on your new carpet), so consistency and patience will have to be practiced. And remember, positive reinforcement is crucial. Focus less on punishing the bad deeds, and more on rewarding the good. Not only is it better for your new puppy, but will give you more effective results.

Allergies and Coats

The breed of dog you are interested in buying is an F1b Goldendoodle. This particular generation is a cross between an F1 Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever x Standard Poodle) and Standard Poodle. F1b Goldendoodles may be more suitable for families that have allergies, because genetically they are more poodle than retriever. However, these dogs are mixes and the results can vary from curly, shaggy, and once in awhile, flat coats.

If someone in your family has severe allergies, please keep in mind no goldendoodle is 100% hypoallergenic or non-shedding.

Personality and Traits

Goldendoodles have a high energy level and need to get an adequate amount of daily exercise, especially if they’re going to be living in an apartment.. They are intelligent and eager to please, and you may find them outsmarting you in some situations! They are naturally friendly and have no problem getting along with other animals and people as long as they are properly socialized as puppies, a task you’ll find to be among one of the easiest. They are great with children and have a gentle and forgiving nature, making them an ideal family pet. They are very affectionate and easy to love.

Grooming

F1b Goldendoodles usually have thick, curly coats that can get very fluffy within a matter of months. Constant brushing is advised to avoid mats, which can be uncomfortable for the dog and can cause pain if left for too long. Grooming appointments should be scheduled once every few months to keep them in tip top shape. Compared to retrievers and other flat coated dogs, grooming maintenance is high for Goldendoodles.

Its very difficult to tell what kind of coat they will have, as it changes over the course of their first year growing. A seemingly flat coated puppy can get curlier as he or she grows.

Size

Considering the sizes of our parent dogs, the puppies will range from a weight of 60-70lb. Yes, they are big and they require a little more of everything. Expect them to go through a full 22lb of dry food a month. This also increases the vital importance of proper training at an early age, while they are still small and easily controlled. Basic commands like sit and stay will be of a huge help to you in the long run. Good leash behavior will also need to be established early on. You might not be bothered when a small puppy makes gentle tugs on your leash, but once they’re half your weight, a gentle tug will easily be rope burn.
